Our Journey: The Birth of WDMC Residences
Hey There, Everyone! It’s Quinton!
If you've found your way to this blog in the year 2023, I've either became insanely lucky and scaled a business way farther than expected; or, more realistically, you're a friend, colleague from LinkedIn, or family member. Thanks so much for taking the time to read about WDMC Residences and how we came to be.
🌍 Where It All Began
Truth be told, I don't think we considered doing something like this for all that long. While this whole venture probably technically started at an extremely young age (my family ran a farm and maintained old farmhouses to rent,) I knew from a pretty young age I most likely wouldn't be running a farming business. A hospitality one, though, that could be different.
The real "beginning" of WDMC actually started on a "leisurely" trip to Colorado. While that trip didn't come without it's own set of problems (learning to ski as an adult can be a painful experience,) we learned that it was technically possible to host AirBnb properties without having to live in the state you live in. This led us down a huge amount of "vacation dreaming" - what if one of these startups takes off and we have the capital to buy some properties? What about just having one property somewhere and hosting like our hosts did? Our minds were racing, and we were on zillow daydreaming for rest of the trip.
"We've always wanted to travel and work, but van life definitely isn't for us"
As we chatted more and more, the idea of WDMC Residences (although it didn't have a name yet) was where we landed.
🏡 Creating Homes with a Heartbeat
When we actually decide to give this whole thing a try, we decided that the best way forward would be to buy a property within our home city so we could strategically shift from what I'll call "self-managed what-the-hell-are-we-doing mode" to "self-managed maintainance mode". As a developer, so many things didnt scare me; however, being physically far from the first property I ever managed did.
"Picking a property close to home to start with was probably the best decision we've made so far"
Every property we create is a piece of us, a blend of our values, dreams, and the joy we find in crafting spaces. It’s not just about constructing spaces to live; it’s about weaving environments that resonate with the spirit of the community around it. As we've been setting up our initial residence, I couldn't believe how much fun we were having crafting not just the space, but also the website, this blog, our marketing materials, our listings and (more on this later...) our tech stack.
💾 Professionalism, Tech, and Heart
Our journey is sprinkled with bits of code and bytes of data. My knack for software and Sarah’s growing interest in data, analyics, and visualization/design are the secret ingredients (dont tell anyone...) to the magic of WDMC Residences.
"We’re hands-on, learning, tweaking, and using our passion to take advantage on the bleeding edge and scaling a business correctly, not necessarily quickly"
Really, my personal (and I suppose at this point professional) take here is that there is a missing crossover of technology and heart in the traveling profressional workspace. Our mission is for the every day living areas for travelling professionals to be simplified, restful, and a joy to be in. With technology and data behind us, we are proving to ourselves that affordable can be added to that list as well.
